Keep away from them by using certain techniques so that you remain aloof from the email and voice mail spasm over the VoIP.
Filtering out the SPIT a challenge
The spammers seem to have nothing to do except spamming. Fortunately, we have some ways through which we can remain aloof from the spammers by deploying various modes and techniques in this regard. The spammers consume a lot of space and VoIP bandwidth and so they must always be discouraged.
For the time being, the spasms on VoIP are not much in number but due to the cheapness of the technology they will also rise with the passage of time and will surely be the reason of a lot more trouble for the VoIP clients. The clients are advised to employ the following measures to keep the SPIT away.
1. Filtration by the VoIP Service Provider: The VoIP service providers like Skype as well as Vonage offer the services of protecting your system from the SPIT. The defense systems of these providers keep you away from the scam and you relax while the providers take the responsibility of filtering out the unwanted SPIT.
2. Authenticated Clientele: The authentication of the clientele is another step forward to let the SPIT away from your system as the VoIP providers stand in a good position to keep the spammers away by authenticating theirs customers.
It means that only an authenticated user of one VoIP will be able to call another VoIP’s authenticated user, thus, making it possible for both to establish a call without the involvement of any SPIT between them. It becomes difficult for hackers to enter the whole Skype or the Vonage systems.
3. Giving a Score for Reputation: The companies have evolved a system based on the past reputation of the callers. If a caller is a SPIT, the source or identity of this call is flagged and transmitted over the whole system to filter it out.
This system does work but sometimes if the caller uses fake identities then it becomes difficult for the system to filter out such calls (SPIT). This system working on the previous reputation of the caller by giving a score to him is a good one.
4. Black Listing: the spam caller numbers are flagged again and again so that a time is reached when you have quite a number of phone numbers flagged as spasm.
With the evolution of the flagged list you black list all such spammers and the next time they are unable to trouble you as their calls will automatically blocked and you will be able to work with great ease. Some of the spam callers may change their identities again to irritate you but this number will be lessened to a great extent.
5. Another way to keep away from the spammers and filter out the SPIT is to take help from a system evolved by NEC, Japan. The system is termed as VoIP Seal. This system allows to users to call and lets it pass through certain tests and then assigns a score to each calling number.
This score is later used as a basis for the filtering process. If the call numbers pass through the test, they have to go through the VoIP seal to bay passing through an answering machine. This two way checking will keep a great many SPITs away.
6. Still another step that can be taken by you is to use the system that provides an automated trial (for filtering out the SPIT) to the spammers. The callers will have to respond to a very simple query asked by the auto attendant of your VoIP system.
The correct response of this query will allow the user to enter the system. Thus, the calls from unknown sources will only be allowed if they pass the test of responding to a very simple query, otherwise, they will be filtered out.
7. The firewall development is another mode to let the spammers remain away from our system. We have to evolve the VoIP firewall for the purpose of better management of our call receiving capability. The firewall is designed and developed to help protect the flow, quality and worth of the traffic and allows only the potential callers while it blocks the rest of the SPIT or the spammers.
Borderware’s SIP assure is the system that may be used for the purpose.
8. Voice recognizing technology may also be deployed in this context so that to keep the SPIT callers aloof from the system. You friend, family members and the clients may have certain voice and vocabulary usage characteristics. The voice recognition technology deploys these voice characteristics to analyze the callers who are calling you.
This system shows 90% accuracy. Microsoft has developed such a system in the name of V-Priorities. This system poses a clean way to assess the caller. But what about the remaining 10% callers for whom it does not work?
9. The calling cost limits is added mode of blocking the unwanted while, on the other hand, allowing the real callers to enter your system. Eyeball’s AntiSPIT authorizes the real clients to establish a call with you by employing the calling charges limits. It assigns a rating flag to all the users as real, doubtful and spammer and points to their category through green, pale and reddish lights respectively.
10. One more technique for the purpose is to use such software that encrypts the conversation of your VoIP. An Intrusion Detection System may also be employed for this end.
As the technology is making progress and more and more people are coming to the VoIP networks, the need for the security systems is increasing and the filtering out the SPIT is becoming a challenge for the people using the VoIP systems.
Not one system is enough for the purpose rather a combination of various available systems must be used to filter out the SPIT and the spammers away from you.
