Yes, it is possible. When you plan to change from your normal service provider to a VoIP service provider, you have to inform the latter to help you retain your existing number. This will enable you to retain the same number when you make business or leisure calls to your business associates or your loved ones.

They can immediately realize the caller’s identity as the number that is displayed on their mobile or their landline phone will be your existing number. This is what we call number portability.

But there are some legal formalities before you can retain your number, Incase you fail to do the formalities, chances are that you can well loose the existing number and you will be provided with a new number.

The number is retainable from Non-VoIP service providers to VoIP service providers and you will not be able to retain when you change from one VoIP provider to another VoIP provider. This is because the VoIP numbers do not become the property of the person using it. The legal authority still remains with the VoIP service provider.

The only problem when you have to make a VoIP call is that you have to be in an internet accessible area unlike other landline and mobile phones where you can call from any where anytime. Here, it is mandatory to have an internet connection; otherwise the calls cannot be processed. The best advantage of a VoIP number is that even if you make an international call, the charges will be similar to a local call you usually make from your office landline or mobile phone.
