In some instances you may need to purchase a router on your own, but a lot of the time whatever service provider you decide to sign-on with will include a choice of a free router or discounted prices on other upgraded routers.

A telephone will be required that will attach to the router, but a multi-handset phone will allow you to have phones located in rooms away from the router.

A big part of your Internet connection requirement is adequate bandwidth.

Bandwidth requirements are greater for voice data than text data, so in order to have clear voice quality on your phone calls; you will need adequate bandwidth or speed of connection.

The more available bandwidth, the clearer the connection will sound.

Software installations will be necessary for the router that you decide on and from whichever service provider that you choose for your Voice over IP phone.

You will be assigned a telephone number as you would with a telephone company, install the necessary software, and you will have telephone service that you can take with you anywhere you take your computer.

No need to spend weeks waiting for phone company appointments, when you have Internet to plug into, then you have telephone service.

You will have access to all of the same features as with any other phone service such as caller ID, voice mail and call forwarding.

Many times this includes a service that will forward any of your calls to another number automatically should the Internet connection go out for any length of time.

Even services like 911 can be offered by VoIP. An address will need to be registered with the service provider and local emergency services.

Should a 911 call come in from the registered number, emergency services will be dispatched to the address on record.

In an age where flexibility is such a necessity for most of us in our everyday lives, Voice over Internet Protocol telephones are a fantastic alternative to a regular telephone line.
