With the advent of high technology, lots of programs and stuffs have been invented and used by the people all over the world.
Some are just plain unnecessary, while some are beneficial and important. And one of those things that belong to latter group is SIP technology.
What is SIP telephony?
Session Initiation Protocol or SIP telephony is a new signaling protocol for presence and messaging that is developed to set up and modify multimedia sessions.
These said sessions consist of voice and video calls over the Internet and instant messaging using Internet Protocol as their medium. The IP acts as the operator, patching the calls and messages back and forth.
Originally designed in 1996 by Henning Schulzrinne and Mark Handley as part of the Internet Multimedia Conferencing Architecture, SIP is fast rising as the new multimedia service both in computers and cellular systems.
How does SIP telephony work?
Session Initiation Protocol allows two end points to establish media sessions with each other.
Using the proxy server, it acts as the connector to both parties and interprets the request to be passed on the other end.
After many evaluations and testing, the IP technology was later changed into Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP.
This technology allows the users to conduct telephone calls using the computer by converting the voice signal into digital signals that travels over the Internet and converts it back when it reached the other end.

Advantages of SIP telephony
One of the biggest advantages of having the VoIP technology is that, it is cheaper that the usual telephone calls.
While telephone calls, especially long distance ones, can really cost a lot to the caller or receiver; domestic or international calls over the Internet only charges half of the expenses you pay compared to the usual telephone calls.
Many telephone companies have been threatened with this technology, while some jumped on the bandwagon and offer some affordable packages suitable for the user’s need.
Another advantage of having SIP technology is having a wide range of multimedia services. From voice to video, everything is almost possible using the Internet.

Disadvantages of SIP telephony
Though this technology may sound perfect, it still has its disadvantages. One disadvantage of Voice over Internet Protocol calls is that it doesn’t have a stable network.
Without a stable network backing the system, there are higher risks of wiretapping and complications when routing emergency calls.
It may also encounter difficulty of identifying calls due to lack of its capability to locate the network. Another problem with using the SIP is that, it may be impeded by firewalls, which typically blocks media packet types.
SIP Telephony is slowly establishing to be a household word.
Though many are still not aware of it, but the market for this is gradually growing especially the appealing advantages it offers.
Needing only a computer and fast Internet connection, everyone can avail the service.
Though the qualities of the call still needs improvement, but let us consider this as a good start of leveling up the communication system.
