VoIP has taken the technology and telecommunication industry by storm. Today, users across the globe can place cheap local and international calls; some of these are even free, unlike a decade ago when dialing oversees would dig holes in the pockets. Installation of VoIP hardware depends on the type of service being offered. VoIP service can be broadly classified into three segments - ATA, IP phone and PC-to-PC. These services are common and available for use both at home and office.

Prior to signing up for a VoIP service, ensure the correct VoIP hardware is installed - VoIP Router, PC Handset/Headsets, ATA and Telephone set. It is important to note that a modem with broadband Internet connection is required to set up the VoIP network.

VoIP Router is the passage to access the service, especially if multiple computers are connected in the same network.  For ADSL broad band connection an ADSL router is required, while for Wi-Fi connections a wireless router is functional.

PC Handsets is an equivalent to traditional phones; however it works once connected via the USB port on the PC. This VoIP hardware works in conjunction with the VoIP software (softphone), wherein phone numbers are dialed through keyboard or handset itself.

PC Headsets on the other hand is a convenient VoIP hardware to place calls, since it has built-in speakers and mic in one single device. The ease of listening, along with voice clarity is better here in comparison to handset.
Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) is a hardware device that acts as an interface between analog PSTN telephone system and a digital VoIP connection. ATA VoIP hardware is required while signing up for a monthly VoIP plan; however, its use is redundant when PC-to-PC VoIP calls are made.

Telephone set plays a vital role in determining the quality of VoIP. Why? This makes up the interface (input and output) between the service provider and the user. Depending on the usage, users can select the best fit from a wide array of options available in this market niche. Examples include: SIP Phones, IP Phones, Wireless IP Phones and existing PSTN phones.

Despite being a fairly new technology, VoIP services and VoIP hardware is evolving rapidly due to cutting edge technology and cut-throat competition. Several VoIP service providers are offering attractive schemes and packages to increase and retain their consumer base.
